All about Flexeril


The generic name of Flexeril is Cyclobenzaprine. Flexeril is a drug for oral administration and available as both 5 mg and 10 mg tablet. It works by preventing the pain impulses from body parts to reach the brain.

When to use:

Flexeril is prescribed for muscle relaxation and pain relief after an injury or any such conditions like sprain and strain that result in severe musculoskeletal spasms.

Usage Instructions:

Dosage: It is a short term drug prescribed for a maximum of three weeks. If too much dosage it will get you Flexeril high.

The daily intake should be as prescribed by your physician, taken with a glass of water, with or without food. In adults (above fifteen years) dosage may vary from 10 mg thrice daily to 5 mg thrice daily or once daily depending on the medical condition and response. However, the dosage should not exceed 60 mg per day. If your condition does not improve after two weeks, inform your physician. Do not increase the dose yourself as the risks of side effects might rise.

Also, never substitute Flexeril for the exercises and rest that your physician has prescribed with it.

If a dose is missed:

Take it within an hour or as soon as you remember. Else if it is too late, continue the next regular dose. Do not take double dose at a single time.

Before prescribing:

Tell your physician about your complete medical history with following details:

– If you have used any Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MOI) in the last fifteen days.

– If you suffer from any heart diseases like an attack, rhythm disorder or a block.

– If you suffer from hyperthyroidism, urine infection, enlarged prostate, glaucoma or liver diseases.

– If you are allergic to any drugs/ medicines.

– If you are using any pain relief medicines, sleeping pills, depression or seizure medicines.

– If you are pregnant or breast feeding.

Avoid the following while taking Flexerils:

– Driving, operating machines or any adventurous sports as Flexeril may cause drowsiness and reduce alertness.

In elderly patients, Cyclobenzaprine HCL is administered from a low dose to gradual increase. However, it is recommended not to use it for them.

Store in room temperature of 25°C, away from heat, light and moisture and keep out of reach from children.

Side Effects:

You may feel a little drowsiness, dryness of the mouth and dizziness. With intake or increase in dosage, if you observe or face any severe difficulty in your physical and mental condition, please report immediately to your physician. Side effects may vary between patients.

Flexeril Overdose:

Overdose of the drug can become fatal. Seek immediate medical help in such a situation.

Common overdose symptoms may be a combination of severe pain in the chest, breathing difficulty with rapid heartbeat, restlessness, shivering, hallucination, convulsions, nausea and vomiting, muscle stiffness, or severe tiredness along with slurred speech, confusion and drowsiness, or a swollen face.

Drug Interactions Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MOI), CNS Depressants like benzodiazepines, nonbenzodiazepines, phenothiazines, carbamates, barbiturates and tricyclic antidepressants show contraindications with Cyclobenzaprine that may become critical.
